National Pet Month is the ideal time to celebrate the animals who bring so much joy to our lives. Whether you’re greeted with a wagging tail or a slow, approving blink, our pets are part of the family – and they rely on us to keep them happy, healthy and thriving.

Here we take a closer look at what the campaign is and what it stands for.

How did National Pet Month start?

National Pet Month began as National Pet Week back in 1989. It’s now a UK-wide campaign which brings together organisations, experts and pet owners to share trusted advice and promote responsible pet care.

What does National Pet Month celebrate?

At the heart of great pet care are the five welfare needs. These simple principles help make sure your pet lives a full and contented life. Let’s dig into what they mean in practice.

1. Companionship: no pet is an island 🐕🐈💞

Pets are social creatures, even the more independent ones. Dogs often love being around people and other dogs. And while cats may prefer affection on their own terms, they still need interaction.

Spending quality time together helps build trust and strengthens your bond. Whether it’s a walk, a play session or a cuddle on the sofa, companionship is key to your pet’s emotional wellbeing. They’re your best bud, after all!

2. Behaviour: letting pets be their natural selves 👯‍♀️

Every pet has natural instincts – from a dog’s urge to sniff and explore, to a cat’s love of climbing, scratching and hunting.

Supporting these behaviours in a positive way can prevent boredom and unwanted habits. Think enrichment toys, scratching posts, training games and safe outdoor exploration. When pets can express themselves naturally, they’re far more likely to feel relaxed and content.

3. Diet: fuelling happy, healthy lives 🍗🐟

A balanced diet is the foundation of your pet’s health. Feeding a high-quality, nutritionally complete food helps support everything from energy levels to coat condition.

Portion control is just as important – it’s easy to over-treat those pleading eyes, but maintaining a healthy weight can help prevent long-term health issues.

Fresh water should always be available. If your cat is fussy about standing water, you could invest in a water fountain which flows continuously, while also filtering the water.

And if you’re ever unsure about what to feed your pet, your vet can point you in the right direction.

4. Health: staying one step ahead 👩‍⚕️🍎

Regular vet check-ups, vaccinations and preventative treatments all play a role in keeping your pet in tip-top shape.

It’s also important to keep an eye out for changes in behaviour, appetite or energy levels – as pets can’t tell us when something’s wrong. Acting early can make a big difference.

And while no one likes to think about it, unexpected illnesses or injuries can happen. Having peace-of-mind pet insurance in place can help you focus on their recovery, rather than worrying about the cost.

5. Environment: a safe and comfortable space 🏡🌳

Your pet’s environment should be a place where they feel secure and at ease.

For dogs, that might mean a cosy bed, a safe garden and regular walks. For cats, it could include high perches, quiet hiding spots and a clean litter tray in a peaceful location.

A stimulating environment also helps prevent boredom – especially for indoor pets. Adding toys, enrichment activities and new experiences can keep curious minds engaged.
