This is an amazing experience where dogs (and their humans) get to enjoy some seriously happy swim time.

What is Dogtember? 🐾

Dogtember is one of the biggest dog swimming events in the UK. Now in its eighth year, it’s an annual, month-long fundraising event held in September at the Saltdean Lido – just a few minutes from Brighton.

Last year, 16,000 dogs and owners enjoyed epic dog-swimming sessions in the heated outdoor pool over the course of four weekends.

It’s also a registered charity, raising money to support the beautiful Grade II* listed modernist landmark’s restoration.

Why is swimming good for dogs?

A happy dog swimming with a float

Swimming offers plenty of benefits for dogs, both physically and mentally. It’s a low-impact form of exercise that works many muscle groups without putting strain on joints. This makes it ideal for older dogs, puppies or those recovering from injury.

Regular swimming can help:

This is especially the case with dogs who struggle with high-impact activities like running.

Beyond the physical advantages, swimming can also be great for a dog’s mental wellbeing. Many dogs find water play stimulating and confidence-boosting. This can help reduce stress and boredom.

Plus swimming often takes place in new, engaging environments. This can provide valuable mental enrichment. And through shared activity, it can strengthen the bond between you and your dog.

Is hydrotherapy covered by pet insurance?

Yes! Petgevity dog insurance covers complementary therapies as recommended by your vet, up to the stated limit. Including hydrotherapy. This can benefit your dog by providing gentle, controlled exercise which:

  • builds strength
  • improves mobility
  • relieves joint pain
  • supports recovery without putting stress on their joints

What is Saltdean Lido?

Saltdean Lido is a Grade II* listed building and one of the UK’s most striking examples of modernist seaside architecture. It opened in 1938, designed by architect R. W. H. Jones. Its distinctive curved lines and streamlined form reflect the ideals of Britain’s modernist movement. It combines bold design with a vision of accessible leisure spaces created for the wider public.

Saltdean Lido now operates as a registered charity (no. 1173503). The trust has a strong focus on health and wellbeing, positioning the Lido as far more than a historic swimming venue. It plays an active role in:

  • supporting mental health
  • encouraging physical activity
  • responding to climate challenges
  • fostering a sense of cultural connection and community belonging
