Here’s what we mean by pre-existing condition at Petgevity:
By ‘anything’, we mean:
Other insurers might define an existing condition differently.
When you take out a Lifetime Plus policy with us, your Confirmation of Cover will list the conditions we’ve agreed to cover, or not cover. We’ll only pay claims for pre-existing conditions we’ve agreed to cover. On the other hand, we won’t pay claims for anything you haven’t told us about or not covered.
At Petgevity, we’re proud to be one of only a handful of insurers that can cover pets with pre-existing conditions with our Lifetime Plus policies.
This cover is subject to acceptance, of course. You need to declare any medical conditions when applying for a policy If these are accepted, then they’ll be shown on your Confirmation of Cover. Without this, you won’t be protected for those conditions.
Be aware that some insurers don’t cover pre-existing conditions at all, while others might have limited cover. For example, some might impose a compulsory excess.
We offer the most comprehensive type of cover. This is Lifetime Plus pet insurance, which covers vet fees up to £15,000. Plus you’ll be able to use your vet fee limit towards claims on most pre-existing conditions, provided they’re declared and we’ve agreed to cover them.
It’s worth noting that some conditions, treatments and investigations have limits. This means there’s a maximum amount which can be paid out if you make a claim. Be sure to check these in your policy wording.
Having comprehensive cover for those unexpected scrapes can help give you peace of mind while your pet continues living their best lives. Discover flexible pet insurance that protects the important four-legged members of your household.

Tell us about your pet’s conditions
We ask a few questions about your pet’s health over the last two years. Once you’ve answered these, we’ll let you know if we’re able to cover their conditions.
Claim multiple times in a year, up to your chosen limit
You can make a claim multiple times in a year for conditions we’ve agreed to cover, up to your annual limit – giving peace of mind if their condition continues or worsens.
For each year you renew, your vet fee limit resets
If you stay with Petgevity on renewal, the amount you’ve claimed towards your limit refreshes. This means you’ll be covered for repeated illnesses.
If we’ve agreed to cover any pre-existing conditions on your policy, you can claim up to your vet fee limit for:
Plus you’ll be covered if your pet develops new symptoms or conditions after you’ve taken out the policy. As well as resolved conditions that don’t need further medication, check-ups, or tests.
Unless you declare your pet’s conditions, and we accept them, they won’t be covered. We’ll confirm your pet’s accepted conditions in writing.
The following won’t be covered by a Petgevity Lifetime Plus pre-existing conditions policy:

Yes, if you want them covered. It’s possible to cover your pet’s pre-existing conditions with Petgevity’s Lifetime Plus policy*. When you get a quote, tell us about any conditions or symptoms your pet’s developed in the last two years.
If you don’t declare any conditions, this could invalidate your policy if you need to make a claim.
If you’re not sure about whether they have any pre-existing conditions, you can ask your vet to check your pet’s health records.
When you make a claim, we get in touch directly with your vet. This is to find out more information about your pet’s health.
Vets will declare any conditions or symptoms shown on your pet’s medical history. They’re classed as a pre-existing condition if they were recorded within the last two years, and before your policy start date.
It’s usually possible to switch your pet insurance over to another provider. But it’s important to know that they might not cover any pre-existing conditions your pet has.
This is why it’s really important to do your homework. If you plan to switch, check the insurer’s policy wording carefully, keeping an eye out for any restrictions which may apply if they do offer pre-existing condition cover.
We may be able to cover your pet immediately if you’re switching to us from another lifetime pet insurer. You need to meet the following conditions for continuous cover:
If you switch but aren’t eligible for continuous cover, these waiting periods will apply once the policy starts:
There are several factors which influence the cost of your pet’s pre-existing conditions insurance. These include:
Yes! We do offer pet insurance for older dogs or older cats with an existing illness or injury, subject to eligibility.
It’s common practice for insurers to make you pay co-payments when your pet gets to a certain age. These are mandatory contributions over and above your excess amount. If you have a Petgevity Lifetime Plus policy, we won’t make you pay this.
So you’re in full control, when you set up your pet insurance with us, you choose how much you want to pay for things like your excess and voluntary bill share.
Yes. If your pet has shown symptoms or been diagnosed with an allergy in the last two years, this will count as a pre-existing condition for our purposes.
This also includes any related ongoing tests, treatment or medication.
We wish for a long, healthy life for your pet. We also understand that pet owners want peace of mind should their pet be in such a condition that it’s kinder to euthanise them.
For this reason, Petgevity policies can have the optional extra of Farewell cover. This means you’re covered if your pet dies, or needs to be put to sleep by a vet due to serious injury or illness.
With Farewell cover, you get £250 towards the cost of:
