Why get kitten insurance?

Kittens are trainee acrobats. While they may start life shy and low-energy, it won’t be long before they’re getting into all sorts of scrapes. And kittens are more susceptible to illness and more likely to have accidents than adult cats.

Vet fees can often be high, particularly for certain treatments or procedures. That’s where cat insurance comes in. Getting the right cover can help absorb the cost of what could otherwise be an expensive trip to the vet.

With Petgevity, you can get peace-of-mind cover from just 4 weeks old. We only provide lifetime insurance, so you can protect your kitten against any injuries or conditions they develop over the course of their lifetime, provided you renew each year.

Plus kitten insurance doesn’t only cover vet bills. Depending on your needs, it may be worth looking into a policy that covers other aspects of kitten life – such as emergency cattery costs, or help with adverts or offering rewards if they go missing.

What Causes What Causes

How much does kitten insurance cost?

The price you pay for kitten insurance depends on a few things. These factors include:

  • Your kitten’s breed. The type of breed will make a difference, as some breeds are more prone to certain health conditions than others. For this reason, pedigree cats might cost more to insure than moggies, for instance.
  • Your cat’s age. As they grow older, your cat’s age will become a more important factor in what you’re likely to pay.
  • Whether they have any pre-existing conditions. This might make insuring them more costly. But you should tell us if your kitten has any conditions, because – if they need it – it’s important to have the right level of cover in place. With our Lifetime Plus policies, we might be able to offer cover for existing conditions, subject to acceptance*.
  • Your location. You may need to pay more for kitten insurance in certain areas of the county, such as London. This is because they’re considered higher risk, based on the amount of claims made there. This also means what you pay for cover may increase or decrease when you move.
  • Any add-ons, excess or bill share you’ve opted for

Before picking the exact level of cover for your fluffball, it’s worth looking into:

  • The cost of emergency treatment at your local vet
  • Genetic issues that may be common in your cat breed, and how much these typically cost to treat

What does kitten insurance cover?

At its core, kitten insurance is there to help with unexpected vet bills. If your kitten gets hurt or becomes unwell, that’s when your policy comes to the rescue.

With a Petgevity policy, you’re covered for:

  • Vet fees
    • Behavioural treatment and complementary therapy
    • Dental accidents
    • MRI/CT scans (up to £2k)
    • Cruciate ligaments (up to £2k)
    • Euthanasia
  • Emergency care

You can also choose optional extras if you need more protection. For a small fee, you can add things like travel and holiday cover, or protection for dental illness. It’s worth thinking about your kitten’s exact needs so you can fashion them a policy that fits them perfectly.

What doesn’t cat insurance cover?

Pet insurance doesn’t generally cover routine and preventative treatments. And Petgevity is no different in this regard. We don’t cover the following:

  • Flea and worming
  • Neutering (spaying and castration)
  • Vaccinations
  • Routine teeth cleaning
  • Routine or investigative tests (unless it’s to diagnose a new or worsening condition covered under your policy)

Many vets offer healthcare plans, so you can spread the cost of these kinds of treatments. Ask your local vet if they have a monthly payment scheme that covers health checks, preventative care, annual boosters and so on.

Our expert says…

“Everyone loves a kitten. They’re curious and playful, and will get bolder as they test their boundaries and yours. This is why it’s a good idea to have protection in place in case the adventure goes too far.

“With peace-of-mind kitten insurance in place, you can rest easy that you’re covered if anything goes wrong, meaning they become injured or unwell. Not having to shell out unexpectedly means you can concentrate on helping them mend, rather than fretting about the cost.”

Frequently asked questions

  • Will kitten insurance cover vaccinations?

Preventative care such as vaccinations aren’t generally covered by pet insurance policies, and Petgevity kitten insurance is no different in that regard. It’s up to you to get your kitten vaccinated and keep your shots up to date. This is also a condition of our cover, but you can rest assured that your kitten will be comprehensively covered for accidental injuries or illness.

  • Am I covered if my kitten is lost or stolen?

Missing Pet Cover can be added to a Petgevity policy as an optional extra. This add-on can cover the cost of advertising, or even a reward for their return, to help get your kitten safely home.

If you’re not reunited in 30 days, you’ll also be covered up to the market value of your kitten, or the cost of cover.

  • Is dental cover included in my kitten insurance?

Our standard kitten insurance includes treatment for dental accidents up to your chosen vet fee limit. You can then extend your cover to include dental illness, up to a maximum of £5,000 or your vet fee limit (whichever is lower).

Some other providers don’t cover dental illness, but this depends on the individual provider and the policy type you choose.

You can find out more about how to keep your kitten’s teeth healthy with advice from a UK vet.
