On 20 July, it’s our 4th birthday! Starting life back in 2021, the time has flown. And we’ve come a long way – now covering hundreds of thousands of paws! To celebrate, we’d like to share some cake with you. Specifically, our favourite pet-friendly cake recipes that we’ve gathered.
So here’s our top 4 dog-friendly cake recipes. And so our aloof feline friends don’t feel left out, there’s a cat-friendly cake too!
Hopefully it should go without saying, but while these cakes are designed to be pet-friendly, it’s best not to give them too much. It should be an occasional treat, supplementing a well-balanced diet… we want our pets to be hunks not chunks.
One of the UK’s favourite dog & cat homes has come up with this lovely dog-friendly birthday cake. It’s easy to make, there’s a step-by-step accompanying video, and a jaunty treat ‘candle’ on top to boot!
This video features doggy cupcakes made for the appreciative pups (and one pig) at The Stubbington Ark, an independent branch of the RSPCA. Made with mashed banana, (dog-safe) peanut butter, honey (use a very small quantity) and rolled oats, these are bite-sized and look delicious.
From the Three Golden Butts TikTok, what we like about this one is that you don’t need to use your oven. It’s made with layered banana pancakes, and a frosting of mashed potato, liver powder and yoghurt. Yum!
For a meaty alternative, this video shows you how to make a very savoury carrot and ground beef cake, with mashed potato frosting. It also features a very good, very patient dog!
Who doesn’t love tuna in cake? This cake for cats from Battersea is super simple, doesn’t require any baking, and also features a jaunty candle. Your cat will love it! Unless they sniff it, turn their nose up and walk off. It’s their prerogative.
A note about ingredients. We’ve avoided using recipes featuring baking soda. While many dog-friendly cake recipes feature a small amount of baking soda to get a rise, it can be toxic to dogs in larger quantities. For this reason, we’ve avoided recipes with baking soda altogether.
When it comes to peanut butter, your best bet is to use a brand specifically made for dogs, not humans. Peanut butter you give your dog should not contain salt or sugar, and absolutely should not contain xylitol under any circumstances.
