What is a pre-existing condition?

Here’s what we mean by pre-existing condition at Petgevity:

  • Anything your pet’s had in the two years before your cover starts, or in the waiting period
  • A condition diagnosed over two years ago which requires ongoing treatment, monitoring or check-ups

By ‘anything’, we mean:

  • Symptoms or signs of changes in health or behaviour
  • Investigation, monitoring, check-up or other veterinary advice
  • Having or needing treatment, medication, surgery or a prescription diet
  • An existing illness, injury or deformity

Other insurers might define an existing condition differently.

When you take out a Lifetime Plus policy with us, your Confirmation of Cover will list the conditions we’ve agreed to cover, or not cover. We’ll only pay claims for pre-existing conditions we’ve agreed to cover. On the other hand, we won’t pay claims for anything you haven’t told us about or not covered.

What Causes What Causes
Can I get pet insurance for pre-existing conditions?

At Petgevity, we’re proud to be one of only a handful of insurers that can cover pets with pre-existing conditions with our Lifetime Plus policies.

This cover is subject to acceptance, of course. You need to declare any medical conditions when applying for a policy If these are accepted, then they’ll be shown on your Confirmation of Cover. Without this, you won’t be protected for those conditions.

Be aware that some insurers don’t cover pre-existing conditions at all, while others might have limited cover. For example, some might impose a compulsory excess.

What Causes What Causes
What type of pet insurance for pre-existing conditions do you offer?

We offer the most comprehensive type of cover. This is Lifetime Plus pet insurance, which covers vet fees up to £15,000. Plus you’ll be able to use your vet fee limit towards claims on most pre-existing conditions, provided they’re declared and we’ve agreed to cover them.

It’s worth noting that some conditions, treatments and investigations have limits. This means there’s a maximum amount which can be paid out if you make a claim. Be sure to check these in your policy wording.

How does pet insurance for pre-existing conditions work?

How Lifetime Pet Insurance Work

Tell us about your pet’s conditions

We ask a few questions about your pet’s health over the last two years. Once you’ve answered these, we’ll let you know if we’re able to cover their conditions.

How Lifetime Pet Insurance Work

Claim multiple times in a year, up to your chosen limit

You can make a claim multiple times in a year for conditions we’ve agreed to cover, up to your annual limit – giving peace of mind if their condition continues or worsens.

How Lifetime Pet Insurance Work

For each year you renew, your vet fee limit resets

If you stay with Petgevity on renewal, the amount you’ve claimed towards your limit refreshes. This means you’ll be covered for repeated illnesses.

What’s covered by pet insurance for pre-existing conditions?

If we’ve agreed to cover any pre-existing conditions on your policy, you can claim up to your vet fee limit for:

  • Changes in existing treatment, prescriptions, medication or therapies
  • Newly prescribed treatments, medication or therapies

Plus you’ll be covered if your pet develops new symptoms or conditions after you’ve taken out the policy. As well as resolved conditions that don’t need further medication, check-ups, or tests.

What Causes What Causes
What isn’t covered by pet insurance for pre-existing conditions?

Unless you declare your pet’s conditions, and we accept them, they won’t be covered. We’ll confirm your pet’s accepted conditions in writing.

The following won’t be covered by a Petgevity Lifetime Plus pre-existing conditions policy:

  • Routine tests or consultations to monitor an ongoing condition
  • Treatments, prescriptions, medications or therapies for a condition unless your pet’s health worsens

Is it worth getting pet insurance for pre-existing conditions?

Having a pet living with a health condition can be worrying enough. So the last thing you want is wondering how to afford treatment if it gets worse.

This is why having comprehensive pet insurance in place can relieve some of the pressure. It means that if your pet’s symptoms worsen, you’ll still have more care options available.

What Causes What Causes
Our expert says…

“Managing existing costs for your pet’s condition is one thing. But you never know when things might take a turn.

“Which is why it’s good to know you have cover in place in case your pet’s health gets worse. This means you can focus your efforts on caring for them, not worrying about how to afford a pricey vet’s bill.”

Frequently asked questions

  • Do I need to declare my pet’s pre-existing conditions?

Yes, if you want them covered. It’s possible to cover your pet’s pre-existing conditions with Petgevity’s Lifetime Plus policy*. When you get a quote, tell us about any conditions or symptoms your pet’s developed in the last two years.

If you don’t declare any conditions, this could invalidate your policy if you need to make a claim.

If you’re not sure about whether they have any pre-existing conditions, you can ask your vet to check your pet’s health records.

  • How do pet insurance companies find out about pre-existing conditions?

When you make a claim, we get in touch directly with your vet. This is to find out more information about your pet’s health.

Vets will declare any conditions or symptoms shown on your pet’s medical history. They’re classed as a pre-existing condition if they were recorded within the last two years, and before your policy start date.

  • Can I change pet insurance with a pre-existing condition?

It’s usually possible to switch your pet insurance over to another provider. But it’s important to know that they might not cover any pre-existing conditions your pet has.

This is why it’s really important to do your homework. If you plan to switch, check the insurer’s policy wording carefully, keeping an eye out for any restrictions which may apply if they do offer pre-existing condition cover.

  • Will my pet’s pre-existing conditions be covered straight away?

We may be able to cover your pet immediately if you’re switching to us from another lifetime pet insurer. You need to meet the following conditions for continuous cover:

    • Declare your pet’s conditions. If accepted, this will show on your Confirmation of Cover. Be aware that only new and worsening symptoms will be covered, not ongoing treatment
    • You must switch from another lifetime pet policy
    • You must also have the same benefits you had on your previous policy, for example cover for missing pets and so on

If you switch but aren’t eligible for continuous cover, these waiting periods will apply once the policy starts:

    • 14 days for new illnesses and symptoms
    • 2 days for accidents
  • How much does pet cover for pre-existing conditions cost?

There are several factors which influence the cost of your pet’s pre-existing conditions insurance. These include:

    • The exact conditions your pet has and their severity
    • Your pet’s breed
    • Their age
    • Where you live
    • Your chosen vet fee limit, excess, bill share, plus any optional extras
  • Do you offer pet insurance for older cats and dogs with pre-existing conditions?

Yes! We do offer pet insurance for older dogs or older cats with an existing illness or injury, subject to eligibility.

It’s common practice for insurers to make you pay co-payments when your pet gets to a certain age. These are mandatory contributions over and above your excess amount. If you have a Petgevity Lifetime Plus policy, we won’t make you pay this.

So you’re in full control, when you set up your pet insurance with us, you choose how much you want to pay for things like your excess and voluntary bill share.

  • Are allergies considered a pre-existing condition for pet insurance?

Yes. If your pet has shown symptoms or been diagnosed with an allergy in the last two years, this will count as a pre-existing condition for our purposes.

This also includes any related ongoing tests, treatment or medication.

  • Does pet insurance cover euthanasia?

We wish for a long, healthy life for your pet. We also understand that pet owners want peace of mind should their pet be in such a condition that it’s kinder to euthanise them.

For this reason, Petgevity policies can have the optional extra of Farewell cover. This means you’re covered if your pet dies, or needs to be put to sleep by a vet due to serious injury or illness.

With Farewell cover, you get £250 towards the cost of:

    • Burial, cremation, or having the vet take care of your pet’s body
    • An urn, box or casket

†Lifetime Plus policies only

*Cover for pre-existing medical conditions is subject to acceptance. They will not be covered unless you have declared them and they are shown on your Confirmation of Cover.

**Illnesses and symptoms won’t be covered in the first 14 days and accidents won’t be covered in the first 2 days of the policy.
