What is an inner limit in lifetime pet insurance?

On applying for lifetime pet insurance, you can choose an annual vet fee limit. This is the maximum you can claim for your pet’s treatment throughout the year.

However, not all conditions are covered in the same way. Many insurers will only pay a specified maximum for certain conditions, rather than the full vet fee limit. This is the inner limit.

When you renew each year, your annual vet fee limit resets to the full amount. And so do the inner limits.

How do I know if my cover has inner limits?

When you take out pet insurance, always check the policy wording, and familiarise yourself with your cover. The policy document will explain if your cover has any inner limits.

With Petgevity policies, you can find any inner limits in the table of benefits in your policy wording. These are referred to in each case as ‘limit of cover’. These are also listed in your Confirmation of Cover.

Some Petgevity policy inner limits include:

  • Behavioural treatment: Up to 12 sessions or your chosen vet fee amount, whichever is lower (Lifetime Plus); or up to £1,000 (Lifetime)
  • Complementary therapy: Up to your chosen vet fee amount (Lifetime Plus); or up to chosen vet fee amount or £1,500, whichever is lower (Lifetime)
  • Cruciate ligament claims: Up to £2,000 or your chosen vet fee amount, whichever is lower
  • MRI and CT scans: Up to £2,000 or your chosen vet fee amount, whichever is lower
  • Prescribed diet food: £250 (Lifetime Plus) or £100 (Lifetime)
